Amsterdam (NH): Seven Countries Houses (Tj. Kuipers, 1894)

Located in Amsterdam's Roemer Visscherstraat is this group of seven houses built in imaginative styles representing seven European countries. The group is known under its Dutch name De Seven Landen (the seven countries) but is in English also referred to as United Europe. Several of the houses are now hotels. Architect Tjeerd Kuipers is otherwise best known for his protestant churches.

From left to right: England is represented by this 'cottage', which unfortunately is not in a very good condition. For The Netherlands the Manneristic style was chosen, resulting in a fairly standard neo-Renaissance design, not unlike other houses further down this street. The house in 'Russian Orthodox' style with its onion-shaped dome of course represents Russia.

From left to right: Perhaps the least recognizable of the seven houses is this one, which represents Italy. The house representing Spain has obvious Moorish influences. For France there's this miniature French Loire château.

Left: Germany is represented by this house in romantic 'Gothic' style.
