Aardenburg (Z)

Small town in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen with its origins in a Roman castellum. Belonged to the duchy of Flanders until the 80-Years War, when protestants conquered the town and violently converted the population. In the Middle Ages Aardenburg had two churches, the St. Bavo and the larger St. Maria, the latter of which was the centre of an important pilgrimage and which was demolished in 1625.

The reformed church or St. Bavo is the most complete example of Schelde- Gothicism in the Netherlands, a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothicism.

The Mennonite church was built as a hidden curch in 1636, but was replaced by a new building in 1792-1793. It was still hidden behind a house then, but in 1887-1888 the house was replaced by a meeting-hall and a gate with tower, all in neo-Renaissance style.

The Roman Catholic O.L. Vrouwe Hemelvaart was built in 1850-1851. It was designed by P. Soffers in neo-Gothic style. In 1924-1925 the choir was replaced by a new, bigger eastern part, designed by J.H.H. van Groenendael.
