Axel (Z)
Town in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

The reformed church is the successor of the medieval St. Petrus which was replaced in the early 17th century. The current church consists of a tower in some strange Ecclectic style which was built in 1865, and part of the nave from the same period. The rest of the church was demolished in 1923 and replaced by a cruciform building in moderate Expressionistic style.

The Roman Catholic St Gregorius de Grote is a church in early neo-Gothic style designed by P. Soffers and built in 1862-1863. Soffers built many similar churches in the diocese of Breda, to which Axel belongs. In 1925-1927 the choir was replaced by a new and bigger eastern part, designed by W. te Riele.

The former Gereformeerde kerk dates from 1899 and was designed by Tj. Kuipers. It was one of the first churches this architect designed in Rationalistic style.

Another protestant church is the Kerk van de Gereformeerde Gemeente, which was built in Traditionalistic style in 1936.
